Dr. Mostofa Sarwar Awarded BILS Literary Award 2026 at 4th Rockland Retreat & Book Fair in New York
USANewsOnline.Com, New York — Renowned academic, scientist, author, Professor Emeritus, and former Vice-Chancellor Dr. Mostofa Sarwar has been conferred with the prestigious BILS Literary Award 2026 at the 4th Rockland Retreat and Book Fair, held on July 25–26, 2026, at the Threefold Educational Center in Chestnut Ridge, near New York City.

Organized by Dr. Dhanonjoy C. Saha, the President of Bengali International Literary Society (BILS), under the central theme “Sari in World Literature and Culture,” the high-profile two-day event drew prominent poets, authors, researchers, and cultural delegates from Bangladesh, India, the United States, Ireland, Australia, Turkey, Guyana, and the Dominican Republic.
A Landmark Gathering of Global Literary Luminaries
Dr. Sarwar officially inaugurated the two-day retreat and book fair, which featured seminars, fiction and poetry readings, recitations, live cultural performances, art exhibitions, and creative workshops. Notable participants included India’s premier contemporary poet Dr. Subodh Sarkar—former Chairman of the West Bengal Poetry Academy, Bangladesh’s poet Muhammad Nurul Huda—former Director General of the Bangla Academy, and Dr. Mohammad Masum, alongside participants from across five continents.
A major cultural highlight of the retreat was a captivating musical and literary performance presented by the International Museum of Saree (IMS). The Global Cultural Ambassador of the IMS, Ustad Kamal Sabri—the “Sarangi Sultan”—mesmerized the audience with his soulful Sarangi recital accompanying the recitation of a long prose poem about the Saree by Dr. Ashvini Persaud, President of the IMS.
Dr. Animita Saha’s solo dance recital, From Darkness to Light: A Prayer Dance, earned resounding applause and filled the venue with a serene sense of joy and peace (shanti).
During the closing ceremony, BILS leadership presented Dr. Sarwar with the BILS Literary Award 2026 in recognition of his lifetime contributions to literature and his role in building intellectual bridges between Eastern literary heritage and Western academia. Concurrently, the inaugural BILS Writers-in-Residence Award was presented to poets Subodh Sarkar (India) and Muhammad Nurul Huda (Bangladesh).
The retreat also recognized outstanding literary talent through its performance awards. Best poetry honors went to Poet Benojir Sikdar for Bengali and Dr. Kausik Kar for English and other languages. In the recitation category, Adrika Das secured the top prize for Bengali, while Dr. Ashvini Persaud was honored for her performance in the English and other languages category.
Inaugural Address: “The Six-Yard Manuscript”
Dr. Sarwar presented his acclaimed thesis, “The Six-Yard Manuscript: The Sari as Bengal’s Living Text” (published in USA News Online and New York Bangla), offering a profound re-examination of the sari as an unstitched, six-yard living manuscript:
Topography & Textile: Mapped how regional weaves mirror Bengal’s riverine geography—from translucent Dhakai Jamdani to historical Baluchari scrolls and resilient Tant cotton.
Literary Symbolism: Analyzed how the garment functions as an essential narrative anchor in classic works by Rabindranath Tagore and modern poetry by Subodh Sarkar.
Global Heritage Benchmark: Highlighted a historic 2019 milestone when his wife, Dr. Syeda Sarwar, wore a traditional Kathan Benarasi sari to the Endymion Extravaganza Ball at the New Orleans Superdome—marking the first time a traditional sari was featured at the historic Mardi Gras gala.
Future Outlook
The 5th annual Rockland Retreat and Book Fair will take place on July 24–25, 2027, centering on the theme “From the Meghna to the Mississippi” (মেঘনা থেকে মিসিসিপি). Professor and researcher Dr. Blanka Notková of Charles University, Czech Republic, widely recognized for her research in Bengali literature, has given her initial consent to participate as the Chief Guest.
