SAMHATI hosts fund-raising Dinner at Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC

USANEWS ONLINE : SAMHAT-a voluntary organization of expatriate Bangladeshi women based in Washington DC area organized its Annual Benefit Dinner today (October 20, 2012) at the Bangabandhu Auditorium of the Embassy of Bangladesh. Mr. Muhammad Abdul Muhith, Deputy Chief of Mission, spoke on the occasion on behalf of Bangladesh Ambassador to USA Mr. Akramul Qader who is sick.  The dinner was proceded by a cultural program in which local artistes Ms. Samia Ahmed presented songs and Mayur Dance Academy performed dances featuring rural life in Bangladesh. Their presentation enthralled the audience among which a good number of them were foreigners. The audience was amused to learn interesting stories from Ms. Noorjahan Bose, Secretary General of SAMHATI in connection with her voluntary works in the rural areas in Bangladesh.

Expressing solidarity with this voluntary organization –SAMHATI Mr. Muhith said the organizers of the Samhati have been carrying forward the torch of humanity for last 28 years in Bangladesh which aimed at educating the elderly male, female and children. He thanked the organizers for the novel initiative. Mr. Muhith also said despite all the disadvantages a least developed country has to face, it has come a long way political democratization and in many social and economic attainments. Bangladesh has achieved remarkable development in all aspects of life, he added.

Founded in 1984, SAMHATI sends the proceeds from annual dinners to Bangladesh to support its various projects aimed at improving the social and economic conditions of women and children of Bangladesh.

On the sideline of the dinner, there was an auction of jewelry, saris and artworks which drew attraction specially from foreign guests. The discussion part was moderated by Ms. Roquia Haider of the VOA. A power-point presentation on the activities of SAMHATI was also screened during the event. Expatriate Bangladeshis, Officers of the Embassy and a good number of foreigners attended the event which earned appreciation from all.
