UsaNewsOnline.Com, New York, 22 November : Mahjabeen Khaled MP, Member, Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, today addressed at the Security Council on “Water, Peace and Security” issue during an Open Debate.

In her address, the MP said, “We consider water to be the vital, sustaining force of our economy, environment, ecology and culture. As a lower riparian, low-lying delta vulnerable to climate change, we constantly grapple with challenges relating to availability of freshwater, especially during the lean season.”

The MP added, “Despite such challenges, under the guidance of our Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, today, more than 98% of our population has access to safe drinking water and above 65% has access to safe sanitation.

MP Mahjabeen said that during the Budapest Water Summit 2016 next week, Bangladesh will advocate for efficient governance and management of water resources, access to less water-intensive technologies and crop varieties, and integrated management of shared river basins.

She reiterated the Bangladesh Prime Minister’s call at the UNFCCC COP22 in Marrakech this month to set up a special global fund for Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 on water to support water related research, innovation and technology transfer.

The MP underscored the importance of water through the three pillars of the UN’s work on peace and security, human rights and development.

MP Mahjabeen reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment for remaining in the forefront of the international community’s efforts in building a water secure world for the entire humanity.

It may be mentioned that Mahjabeen Khaled MP is now in New York to attend activities of several committees of the ongoing 71st Session of UNGA.
