Bangladesh takes a pragmatic approach to the Protection of Civilian and Medical Care mandate (POC) while adhering to the principles of peacekeeping operations – Ambassador Masud Bin Momen at UN

UsaNewsOnline, New York : “As a lead troop contributing countries, Bangladesh takes a pragmatic approach to the POC mandate in both practice and preparedness, while adhering to the principles of peacekeeping operations”, said Masud Bin Momen, Ambassador and Permanent Representative (PR) of Bangladesh to the United Nations during an Open Debate at the UN Security Council 25 May, on ‘Protection of Civilian and Medical Care in Armed Conflict’. Mentioning the announcement of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Peacekeeping Summits in New York, the Permanent Representative said, “We remain committed to further mainstreaming POC into the peacekeeping training programmes designed for our troops and police”. The ambassador stated, “Protection of civilians through military means alone would always fall short unless vigorously supported by meaningful political processes to prevent conflicts and sustain peace”. The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres made a speech at the opening of this event. The Uruguay Presidency of the Council for this month convened this Open Debate. Ambassador Momen thanked the Uruguay Presidency for organizing this Open Debate to coincide with first year anniversary of the adoption of the Council Resolution 2286 in 2016 in this regard.
