Drishtipat DC Celebrates World Languages

Washington DC, – International Mother Language Day, the U.N. holiday inspired by the Bangla language movement, was marked with great fanfare to an audience of hundreds in Washington, DC, on February 19.  “We are really proud that a day that is very significant for Bangladesh is now being celebrated at a global scale,” said an audience member.The 4^th annual “One World, Many Voices” celebration, presented by Drishtipat DC, featured live music and colorful dance performances from Bangladesh, Ivory Coast, Japan, Palestine, Peru, Senegal and the United States. “It is wonderful to see so many people from so many different places come together under one roof and celebrate each others culture and language,” an audience member said. “The show was outstanding and interactive.”According to the National Geographic, every 14 days, a language dies. At least half of the world’s languages are projected to disappear this century. Through this multi-cultural event Drishtipat DC celebrated the world’s 7,000 languages and highlighted the need for language preservation.Drishtipat DC is a social justice organization that works within the Bangladeshi and Bangladeshi-American community in the US.
