Minister for Education Chairs two side events organized by WFP and FAO in Geneva

New York :Minister for Education(EM), Nurul Islam Nahid, MP 7th July chaired two important meetings held as side events of the High-level Segment of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations in Geneva. The first meeting that the Minister Chaired was organized by WFP. Another meeting on “Unleashing the potential of rural people through education and training for food security and development” that the Minister Chaired, was jointly organized by FAO UNESCO, WFP, ILO and DESA. Qiang Tang, Assistant Director General of UNESCO also attended the meeting as a panelist. During the meeting, Nurul Islam Nahid, MP highlighted that under the leadership and vision of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, education is accorded high priority in the Vision 2021. He also apprised the meeting of the ‘One house, one farm’ Programme of the government. He mentioned that the Agriculture Information Service is playing a commendable role in disseminating web-based information on agriculture. The Minister also attended the ECOSOC Plenary Session on ‘Promoting sustained, inclusive and equitable growth for accelerating poverty eradication and achievement of the MDGs’.Both the meetings chaired by the Minister were attended by a large number of Ministers, Heads of delegations, ambassadors of different countries  based in Geneva as well as high senior UN officials.

The Secretary, Ministry of Primary and Mass Education (MoPME) Abdul Awal Mazumder and Bangladesh Permanent Representative to the UN in New York who is also the Vice-President of the ECOSOC Dr AK Abdul Momen also took active part in the proceedings of the meeting organised by WFP and FAO.In his capacity as the Vice-President of the ECOSOC Dr AK Abdul Momen also presided over an important parallel session dedicated to the General
Debates on the the theme of the High level segment of the ECOSOC Annual Substantive session. Heads of different delegations took part in the debate.The Economic Minister of Bangladesh Permanent Mission to the UN in New York,  Nojibur Rahman took part in two sessions of the Annual Ministerial Review (AMR) held in the morning and the afternoon where Turkey, Pakistan, Mexico and Qatar presented their NVP reports. The Economic Minister acted as one of  the three reviewers of Turkey’s and Pakistan’s  NVPs and delivered statements on behalf of Bangladesh under the kind guidance of the leader of the Bangladesh delegation (EM).
