International Literacy Day September 8 2022
Stephanie Raza : International Literacy Day, September 8 2022, Children, Teachers and Literacy Specialists from New York City are celebrating by rethinking literacy learning spaces to build inclusive education for all. We donated supplies and learning tools for low-income K-12 students going back to school in New York.
Local spokesperson, Stephanie Raza from Miss Immigrant USA says today, we hope to raise greater awareness about literacy and how it’s a passport to a better future.
Sadly, too many children in NYC grow up into adults with limited or no ability to read. The lifelong consequences of illiteracy are huge says Stephanie Raza, including unemployment, poverty, and greater levels of health and social problems.
Learning to read in your early years is critical to reach your full potential.
This year’s International Literacy Day will be celebrated worldwide under the theme, “Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces” and will be an opportunity to rethink the fundamental importance of literacy learning spaces to build resilience and ensure quality, equitable, and inclusive education for all.
Stephanie Raza says our affiliation with the World Literacy Foundation with our work in NYC is a wonderful partnership to bring the global knowledge, expertise and resources to help reduce the high rates of illiteracy in USA.
The Pandemic caused catastrophic rise in illiteracy says Mr Andrew Kay, CEO of the World Literacy Foundation
He says we are in a recovery mode, with 1 billion students impacted by lockdowns triggering the world’s biggest educational disruption in history.
“770 million people in the globe can’t read or write a single word and a further 2 billion people struggle to read a sentence,” said Mr Andrew Kay.
“Reading skills are the key determining factor for a child’s future academic success and reaching their full potential. What are the consequences of illiteracy? Poverty, unemployment, and life-long social, economic and personal problems.
The World Literacy Foundation is a peak global literacy charity serving in 52 countries.
