Ambassador Mohammad Ziauddin met Congressman Steve Chabot, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific

UsaNewsOline.com: Bangladesh Ambassador Mohammad Ziauddin met the influential Republican Congressman Steve Chabot, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific at his office in Capitol Hill, 9 September.

Ambassador Ziauddin discussed on the poverty alleviation, trans-border terrorism, secularism, economic developments in Bangladesh, 10^th Parliamentary elections and International Crime Tribunal- Bangladesh (ICT-BD) and other issues of mutual interests.

Ambassador Ziauddin said that the present Government led by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina working relentless to curb the extremism and trans-border terrorism; number of forthcoming countries are helping Bangladesh in this enormous endeavour.

Discussing the 10^th parliamentary elections Ambassador Ziauddin said that this parliamentary election is marked as the triumph of democratic, secular and progressive values over the religious extremism and rampant violence. As the party voted to power with significant majority, the Government of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is steadfast to work hard to bring qualitative changes in the lives of the people of Bangladesh. Ambassador expressed deep gratitude to the people and government of the United States for their continued engagements and assistance to Bangladesh.

Responding to Congressman Chabot Ambassador Ziauddin explained the context of creation of ‘International Crime Tribunals’, Ambassador mentioned that these trials will end the culture of impunity and ensure justice to the victims who had been in a trauma for the last four decades. Ambassador also added that, the convicts can appeal to the Supreme Court against the verdicts of the Tribunals. He mentioned that even in case of so many countries in the world there had been no such recourse to the apex court of the land for appeal, but to an appeal chamber of the same tribunals.

Lauding Bangladesh’s positive developments, Congressman Steve Chabot expressed his deep interests on Bangladesh and commended the existing people to people contact between the two countries. He welcomed the new Ambassador to the United States and assured him the best possible cooperation throughout the tenure.
