Bangladesh calls for reform of NAM’s decision-making process to re-energize the Movement’s unity
USANewsOnline.Com Desk : Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain today 15 October called for unity and reform of decision-making process among the NAM members to better address their shared vulnerabilities.
Speaking at the plenary of the 19th Mid-Term Ministerial Conference of NAM in Kampala, Uganda, Mr. Hossain said that, following last year’s mass uprising, the people of Bangladesh reaffirmed their commitment to undertake reforms to strengthen institution, ensure rights and uphold accountability. It is now of critical importance to invest in empowering women and harnessing the power of youth to build a strong and prosperous nation, he added.
Foreign Adviser urged the NAM members to concentrate more on unity than on fragmentation and mistrust in order to build on the founding ideals – equality, solidarity and justice. “At a time when we are discussing reforms across the United Nations, we should also consider streamlining NAM’s decision-making process to re-energize the Movement’s unity,” he added.
In the afternoon, Mr. Hossain participated in the NAM Ministerial Committee meeting on Palestine of which Bangladesh is a member. He reiterated Bangladesh’s unwavering commitment for the Palestinian cause. Welcoming the recently agreed ceasefire in Gaza, he reaffirmed Bangladesh’s support for a two-state solution based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Palestine.
The Foreign Adviser also drew attention to Bangladesh’s continued humanitarian burden in hosting Rohingyas for a long time and urged the international community to help ensure their return to their own country, Myanmar.
On the sidelines of the Conference, Foreign Adviser also signed an instrument between Bangladesh and Uganda on the commencement of Foreign Office Consultations an arrangement establishing regular talks on full spectrum of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain is leading a Bangladesh delegation to the 19th Mid-Term Ministerial Conference of NAM being held in Kampala which is expected to adopt a political declaration as well as a ministerial declaration on Palestine tomorrow (16 October), at the end of the conference.
