Bangladesh co-chairs multi-stakeholder panel session on Global Road Safety, calls for stronger institutions to save lives
USANewsOnline.Com Desk, New York, 21 July 2026: Minister of Road Transport and Bridges Shaikh Rabiul Alam has called for stronger institutions, coordinated implementation and greater accountability to accelerate progress in reducing road traffic deaths and serious injuries worldwide.
On Tuesday the Minister, who co-chaired the multi-stakeholder panel session at UN Headquarters in recognition of Bangladesh’s leadership on improving road safety, said strong institutions must be matched by effective action across the entire road transport system.
Referring to the Progress Declaration, he underscored the importance of close coordination among transport, health, police, finance, education, environment and local government authorities, supported by clearly defined institutional responsibilities and coherent public policies. He also highlighted the important role of local governments, the private sector, civil society, academia and young people in advancing road safety, emphasizing that their contributions should be guided by strong government leadership and accountability.
The Minister urged participants to focus on how countries can translate political commitments into effective institutions, coordinated implementation and measurable reductions in road traffic fatalities and serious injuries.
It may be noted that Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Shaikh Rabiul Alam is leading the Bangladesh delegation at the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Improving Global Road Safety being held at United Nations Headquarters. Other members of the delegation include Secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Division Dr. Mohammed Ziaul Haque and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury.
