UsaNewsOnline.Com, New York : Golam Faruk Khandakar Prince MP, Member, Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges the UN to do more to ensure the efficiency and sustainability of the UN Peace keeping operations. He was speaking at the Special Political and Decolonization Committee of the 74th Session of the UN General Assembly on ‘Comprehensive review of the whole question of Peacekeeping Operations in all their aspects’, 4 November at the UNHQs.
In the
statement, he particularly stressed on the
need for specific institutional mechanism within the UN system for informed and
regular dialogues among all stakeholders, improvement of safety and security
situation on the ground, creating interlinkages between peacekeeping and
peacebuilding, relationship between performance and resources, increasing the
number of female, limiting environmental footprints in peacekeeping missions,
and addressing budget issues.
The MP
reiterated Bangladesh’s support on SG’s zero tolerance policy against all forms
of sexual exploitation and abuse by peacekeepers. He also mentioned that Prime
Minister Sheikh Hasina is a member of the Circle of Leadership on the
prevention of and response to sexual exploitation and abuse by peacekeepers.
Besides this event, the MP also delivered
statements at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Open Debate on ‘Women
Peace and Security’. He said that Bangladesh, in October 2000, as a
non-permanent member of the Council played a leading role in the adoption of
UNSC Resolution 1325 on WPS to strengthen the process and creating consensus across women’s
extreme vulnerability in conflict situation. He added that Bangladesh is
working to prepare its 1st National Action Plan on UNSCR 1325.
Golam Faruk Khandakar MP is now visiting New
York for participating in the ongoing proceedings
of the Main Committees of the General Assembly under the 74th UNGA.
