BOROUGH PRESIDENT GIBSON CELEBRATES BRONX COMMUNITY DISTRICTS AMONG NYC`S LEADING CONTRIBUTORS TO HOUSING DEVELOPMENT
USANewsOnline.Com Desk, New York – The Bronx continues to play a significant role in addressing New York City’s housing needs, with multiple Bronx Community Districts among the city’s leading contributors to affordable housing development, according to data released October 1 by the NYC Department of City Planning (DCP) as part of its Affordable Housing Fast Track.
The Affordable Housing Fast Track was established through amendments to the City Charter approved by New York City voters in November 2025. The new process is intended to increase affordable housing production and ensure that communities across the city contribute to meeting New York City’s housing needs. Beginning January 1, 2027, eligible affordable housing projects in the 12 Community Districts with the lowest rates of affordable housing development will be able to use an expedited public review process.
DCP analyzed all 59 Community Districts based on the rate of affordable housing development over a five-year period from July 2021 through June 2026. The analysis measures the number of new affordable dwelling units in each Community District as a percentage of the total number of housing units in that district at the beginning of the five-year cycle.
Notably, none of the 12 Community Districts identified as the city’s lowest contributors are located in The Bronx. In fact, The Bronx is well represented among the Community Districts contributing the most affordable housing, with three of the top four Community Districts citywide located in the borough. Of the 65,777 total affordable housing units created in the past five years, 22,325 of those units were located in The Bronx – which is 33.9% of all affordable housing across NYC.
“It is not a surprise that The Bronx is producing some of the most affordable housing in the city,” said Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson. “I have promoted and will continue to promote affordable housing as a way for residents to afford and stay in their homes, which helps build and preserve communities. All New Yorkers deserve safe and dignified housing, and I am proud of all 12 Bronx Community Districts for taking on their fair share of affordable housing and supporting the future growth of our city.”
During Borough President Gibson’s first term, The Bronx has seen historic growth, with more than 51,000 housing units, more than 64 million square feet of development, and more than $22 billion in investment, including housing and economic development activity documented in the Borough President’s Annual Development Reports. These numbers further demonstrate The Bronx’s continued contribution to growth and investment across New York City.
“This data highlights The Bronx’s important role in creating new housing and supporting the city’s broader housing goals. The Bronx continues to lead!” concluded Borough President Gibson.
