Manhattan BP Levine issues statement on the announcement of the installation of a migrant center on Randall’s Island

Manhattan — Tuesday, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine issued the following statement in reaction Mayor Adam’s announcement of the installation of a migrant center on Randall’s Island.

“While there are a number of challenges with the Randall’s Island site, there is no denying that NYC needs to expand capacity to accommodate the continuing stream of asylum seekers arriving here. Every borough needs to do its part in welcoming these newcomers, and that absolutely includes Manhattan.

These asylum seekers have endured enormous hardship in their home countries and throughout their long journeys. It is reprehensible that Governor Abbott continues using them as political pawns. I am proud that New Yorkers are stepping up to receive them with open arms. I know that these families have a great deal to contribute to our city.

For this plan to succeed, many logistical concerns must be addressed at the Randall’s Island site, particularly the limited transportation options there. To ensure asylum seekers can easily move to and from the island, service on the M35 bus should be greatly expanded, and regular ferry service must be established connecting Randall’s to the mainland of Manhattan.

The City needs to double down on the provision of permanent housing vouchers to those currently in our shelters, to quickly get New Yorkers experiencing homelessness into permanent homes, and to open up space in the overcrowded shelter system. And we need to continue to advocate for federal leadership to expedite work permits for asylum seekers, coordinate a national resettlement plan, and more quickly reimburse localities like NYC for costs incurred.

I look forward to working with my colleagues at all levels of government to ensure we respond effectively and compassionately to the cynical actions of Governor Abbott.”
