UsaNewsOnline.Com Desk : Bangladesh High Commission in Singapore observed the “Martyrs’ Day and International Mother Language Day” with due solemnity and in a befitting manner. The day-long program started with hoisting of the national flag at half-mast by High Commissioner Mr. Md. Mustafizur Rahman, officials of the High Commission and members of expatriate Bangladesh community and Bangladeshi community organizations in Singapore. A special prayer was offered for the salvation of the language martyrs as well as seeking divine blessings for the continued peace, progress and prosperity of Bangladesh. A one-minute silence was also observed as a respect to the martyrs. Messages from the Hon’ble President, Hon’ble Prime Minister, Hon’ble Foreign Minister and Hon’ble State Minister for Foreign Affairs were also read out in the morning session.
A discussion meeting on the significance of the day was held in the evening. At the discussion, High Commissioner Md. Md. Mustafizur Rahman payed glowing tribute to the language martyrs and said that International Mother Language Day has now become a day of celebration of linguistic diversity around the world.

In this context, he recalled the contribution of the martyrs as well as the role of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the historic language movement. He also mentioned Bangabandhu’s speech in Bangla at the United Nations General Assembly in 1974. He underscored the significance of the language movement in the evolution of our national history which in fact sowed the seeds of Bangladesh’s independence in 1971.
The discussion segment was rounded off with a colorful multi-lingual cultural program. The stellar performance by the artists, including children from multi-racial and multi-lingual backgrounds, enthralled the audience and manifested a unique harmony of the nations for the protection of cultural diversity. Representatives from social and cultural organizations, students of different educational institutions and a large number of the members of the Diaspora attended along with their families. The guests were served with traditional Bangladeshi cuisine.
