NYC Council Member Dromm Kicks Off Thai New Year Street Festival in Elmhurst
UsaNewsOnline.Com Desk, News York : On Saturday, April 22nd NYC Council Member Daniel Dromm (D-Elmhurst, Jackson Heights) and Elmhurst entrepreneur and resident Juttana “Moo” Rimreartwate hosted the second Thai New Year Street Festival on Woodside Avenue between 75th and 77th Streets in Elmhurst, Queens. Attendees were treated to Muay Thai kick boxing demonstrations, yoga and pilates classes, special music and dance performances and samplings of delicious Thai cuisine. The New Year festival, called “Songkran,” is the most important holiday for the Thai community. Songkran takes place from April 13th – 15th each year but is typically celebrated throughout the week. The holiday is rich with symbolic traditions, and is a time for family reunions and an annual house cleaning. Those observing Songkran also visit local temples and offer food to the Buddhist monks. Dromm and Rimreartwate founded Elmhurst’s first Thai New Year Street Festival last year as a way to showcase the outstanding cuisine and rich performing arts tradition that can be found in Elmhurst’s “Little Thailand.” “I am delighted to co-host this celebration in the heart of Elmhurst’s Little Thailand once again,” said NYC Council Member Daniel Dromm (D-Jackson Heights, Elmhurst). “From mouth-watering cuisine to a robust performing arts tradition, Elmhurst’s Thai community has much to offer the rest of New York City. It was a pleasure to partake in this exciting celebration with residents from every nation. I take great pride in Elmhurst and look forward to bringing additional programming and cultural celebrations to our neighborhood.” The event will be repeated next Saturday, April 29th from 10 am to 6 pm and will feature special Thai art and a “Mr. and Mrs. Thai” pageant.
