NYC Council Member Hanif Secures Second Term : Council’s First Muslim Woman Member Declares Victory

USANewsOnline.Com Desk, New York : With the polls closing, early results show a clear victory for Council Member Hanif in her reelection campaign in District 39. In response to these results, Council Member Hanif offered the following statement on her resounding reelection victory.
“I want to first extend my sincerest gratitude to the voters, volunteers, and supporters who made today’s victory possible. From petitioning in the cold to fundraisers in neighbors’ apartments, this campaign has always been a true grassroots effort to ensure we have progressive leadership in City Hall. Today, we won and ensured this community will have brave, progressive representation for two more years.
When I launched my campaign for City Council nearly three years ago, I promised transformative change for my community and the City at large, and I’m proud to say we have delivered. In my first term, I passed legislation to create the nation’s largest curbside composting program, helped earmark $1 million to support low-income individuals seeking abortion in New York City, and created our City’s first-ever Immigrant Worker Bill of Rights. I have been a tireless champion for my community, but I know our work is far from over. We still need to ban the use of biometric technology in public spaces, mandate our City’s first-ever public outreach campaign to combat antisemitism, and end the Mayor’s dangerous 30/60-day shelter stay limits for asylum seekers. The challenges our City faces are radically different than the ones I encountered when I took office nearly two years ago, but I still have hope that we can build a more caring, more compassionate, and more just City together.
Representing the community that raised me has been one of the greatest privileges of my life, and I know my work in City Hall has only just begun. I look forward to using this next term to continue passing transformative legislation for the working-class communities of the City and delivering for the people of my district.
