Prospect Park’s Goats Have Arrived For Another Summer of Weed-Eating

By Rachel Holliday Smith, PROSPECT PARK — Brooklyn’s weed-eating munch bunch is back in business — and ready for visitors. Four hardworking goats have arrived in Prospect Park for another season of clearing vegetation and invasive weeds in the park’s Vale of Cashmere and surrounding woods, the Prospect Park Alliance said Monday. The popular mini-herd — first brought to the park last May, then again in August — is made up of two types of goats this year, the alliance said: one black and white pygmy goat (named Max, in case you’re wondering) and three “Toggenburg” goats, a Swiss breed famous for their productivity. The goats arrived last week and will be on view this Saturday at “Fun on the Farm,” a free, kid-friendly (no pun intended) event where children can learn to card and spin wool at the nearby Lefferts Historic House, join a parade at the Prospect Park Zoo and take a self-guided tour of the restoration area where the goats are working. But you don’t have to wait for the weekend to see the herd. They are busy eating in the areas around the Vale of Cashmere on the east side of East Drive any day of the week.
