UsaNewsOnline.Com Desk, Jamaica, N.Y. – May 6 – Spectrum and the South East Asian Fund for Education, Scholarship and Training (SAFEST), a Queens-based nonprofit, announced and unveiled the opening of a Spectrum Learning Lab with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the school in Jamaica.
SAFEST
is a non-profit organization that educates and integrates underserved
newcomers, usually South Asian immigrants, into the civic and economic life of
New York City. The organization’s mission is to develop the skills needed to
create a prosperous and vibrant community where immigrants can seize existing
opportunities or increase them to reach their full career potential.
The
Spectrum Learning Lab at SAFEST is one of the 32 that Spectrum has established
at nonprofit and community organizations across New York City. The Spectrum
Learning Lab will be particularly beneficial for developing
digital learning strategies that will equip immigrants with the skills they
need to secure a job or build a business. The Lab also will support SAFEST’s English
as a Second Language programs.
The
Spectrum Learning Lab at SAFEST is fully
equipped with state-of-the-art computers and other peripheral equipment provided by Spectrum. As part of the Learning Labs, the company provides
Internet access to community organizations at no charge. The company’s
commitment to the Learning Lab includes Spectrum Internet and TV services,
computer equipment and software, flat-screen HDTVs and other furnishings.
“SAFEST
plays an important role in the lives of many immigrants in the Queens
landscape,” said Rodney Capel, Spectrum vice
president of government affairs. “Through this Learning Lab, Spectrum is helping to provide them with
the technologies and skills they need to succeed in this rapidly changing
digital world.
Spectrum Learning Labs help participants build computer,
internet and other communications skills in communities across New York City.
Spectrum and its parent company, Charter, plans to open 40 such labs across New
York City by 2020.
