STATEMENT FROM BRONX BOROUGH PRESIDENT DIAZ RE: City & State Announcements on NYCHA

UsaNewsOnline.Com Desk, New York : “Last night’s announcement by Governor Cuomo that he intends to issue an emergency declaration for the New York City Housing Authority is a welcome, necessary step that will provide true relief for the more than 400,000 New Yorkers who call public housing their home.
“As these residents have faced brutal cold and a lack of heat and hot water, I have led the charge for NYCHA to declare an emergency and cut red tape, and I am honored to have been joined by nearly 60 of my colleagues in this fight. The Governor has heeded our call. Conditions in NYCHA are often inhumane, and Governor Cuomo’s intention to declare an emergency in our city’s public housing system is the morally correct response.
“It is unfortunate that City Hall has refused to recognize the pressing need for this action. Today’s announcement by the administration of an expedited process to repair and replace NYCHA heating systems shows that the agency understands the need for a faster procurement process. Unfortunately, NYCHA has not to this point demonstrated a sufficient sense of urgency in addressing this problem. Thankfully, Governor Cuomo is prepared to move forward for the benefit of the resident of our public housing system.
