Women are Agents of Development
Sharke Chaman Khan: “Women are agents of development. Inspired by this perspective Bangladesh during its presidency of the UN Security Council steered the adoption of the Security Council Resolution no 1325 in 2000.” Bangladesh Representative (PR) to United Nations (UN), Dr. A. K. Abdul Momen said this while he was delivering a statement at a Panel Discussion on “Women and the Human Rights to Peace” at a side event of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW 55) 2011, on Thursday, 24th February at the UN-HQ. It was jointly organised by the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the UN, the Spanish Society for International Human Rights Law (SSIHRL) and Women’s UN Report Network (WUNRN).
In his statement, Dr. Momen stated that despite our many limitations and varied challenges, including poverty, negative effects of climate change, resource constraints, Bangladesh is committed to the protection and promotion of human rights and peace as well as vulnerable population specially women and children worldwide. He also mentioned that as a member of the UN Human Rights council, Bangladesh remains engaged in constructive dialogue with the international community in espousing the cause of human rights.
The panel discussion was moderated by the former Bangladesh PR and President of the UN Security Council (March 2000 and June 2001) and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Ambassador Anwarul K. Chowdhury; President of the Hague Appeal for Peace, Ms. Cora Weiss; Representative of the SSIHRL in Geneva, Mr. David Fernandez Puyana; Executive Director, Femmes Africa Solidarite (FAS), Co-Chair, Civil Society Advisory Group to the UN on Women and Peace and Security, Ms. Bineta Diop; Coordinator Women’s UN Report Network-WUNRN, Ms. Lois A. Herman and Attorney and International Human Rights Lawyer Ms. Mikiko Otani also participated as discussants.
