Please lend out your hand of help to bring these poor families to justice and their basic right
Mazeda A. Uddin : This is a humble request to come forward for the sake of humanity. The two Muslim tenant families have been tortured and deprived of their basic rights of gas and electricity and even after paying their rents on due time. On the second floor, two old husband and wife, two couples with three children and on the first floor a mother with three children including a 9-month-old baby- altogether 13 people have been tolerating this injustice for months, not being able to eat properly, bathe, or do any activities right and having to buy food daily from outside. Two days ago, with the help of assemblyman and city council, electricity supply has been provided to the house but they still are living their days without gas and hot water supply. One of the tenants, Faridha Yeasmin, mother of three children, shared her part of the struggle. She came to the United States of America in last May. She rented the place she is currently residing in as a tenant in last September. The landlord did not fix and complete several tasks for the house that he was already supposed to finish before renting it to someone. He still did not do anything about it even when she kept on reminding him. She paid her rent on due time. During the winter, he did not provide them with enough heating around the house. At that time, she was living there with her new born baby and she had an extremely hard time managing in that situation. On January 16th, he suddenly came to her dining room and said he would go to jail for killing her baby son. He started swearing and cursing her when she protested to that. She went silent in fear because she knew he was a hunter and he might carry his gun. On top of that, on 12th May this year, the Fire department came and cut down the gas and hot water supply due to leakage. Her landlord was fined for $300. On the 23rd of the month he asked her to pay the rent in advance and said if she did not do that, he would not provide gas at all. She did as he said and paid her rent and then he supplied the gas line on the 25th. In the meantime, she went through a lot of difficulty with her children. Then on June 8th again, there was no gas or hot water supply in the house. When she tried contacting with her landlord about everything that was happening, he did not answer anything to that. After that he left the house and went somewhere. Then in the evening of June 21st, when he was leaving after cutting down the electricity supply, she saw him. After she tried asking him he only left shouting at her. She felt totally helpless at that point and couldn’t figure out what to do. Her entire house was in darkness. Her children were all crying and it was that time of the evening when they break our day-long fast. She drank some water and called 911 somehow. It was over an hour and they still weren’t here. They came in when she called them for the second time. She did not get any significant help from them. To be honest, she was unable to figure out what to do. The entire month of Ramadan of fasting and the Muslim celebration days of Eid she survived without any supply of gas and electricity. Did he not have any humanity at all? Her oldest daughter was three and a half years old while the newborn was only nine months old. She couldn’t even feed or bathe them properly in this heat. It was totally unfair to her while her babies weren’t even getting their basic human rights met. She called 911 the next day again but they couldn’t help when they came. She filed a complaint by calling 311 but nobody could provide with a supply of gas, water and electricity. She has been living in an extremely difficult condition with her three children. Nobody helped her. Humanity seemed to be lost. Her babies are getting more and more sick every day. Her oldest daughter is scared and goes to sleep every evening in fear. Her husband is outside the country and right now she is a helpless mother of three. She went to civil court on the 23rd and filed a case. Even considering it as an emergency they gave the court date late as on the 30th of June. She got to talk to Mazeda from SAFEST and she was the only one who lent out her hand to help her. She managed her a lawyer for free through legal aid from city council. However, since her landlord couldn’t show up on 3oth June, the hearing date for the case has been rescheduled to July 6th. Since the last so many months she has been going through such bad conditions with her three young children and she is not even able to eat or feed her children right. But her question is why? What is her fault here? What did her children do? She paid all her rents on time then why does she have to go through this? Even after living in the best country and city in this world with all the available facilities why is she still deprived when she didn’t do anything wrong? Now she wants justice for herself , her children and especially her nine month old baby. She want the landlord to treat her and her family with respect. She want the landlord to stop harassing her and to give herself and family the decent living conditions to which we are entitled.. Today was another Court date But Legal aid Attorney said they have sent for warrant against Landlord but they needs another Two weeks which is july 17th.Because there are hundreds of warrents to process through the Queens Court.
