Bangladeshi-American Psychiatrist Dr. Monowara Begum

UsaNewsOnline.Com, New York : Dr. Monowara Begum graduated from Chittagong medical college, Bangladesh and came to USA in 1975. She completed four years of psychiatry training in a prestigious hospital
in NY and is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and neurology as a diplomate in the specialty of psychiatry. She obtained further training in psychoanalysis and awarded a psychiatric associate title by the American academy of psychoanalysis.
She worked at Rockland Psychiatric center in NY for thirty years as an Attending Psychiatrist, Medical Director, and Vice President of the Medical Staff Organization. Currently, she is the Director of psychiatric services at the Residential treatment Center for mentally ill adolescents and has a private practice for over thirty years in Tappan, New York.
She has been an executive board member of the district branch of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) for many years and was the Chairperson of the Depression Screening Committee. In this role, she performed screening of various mental illness in the public places like shopping malls, college campus and street fair to reduce the stigma of mental illness. She served as a President of the district branch of the American Psychiatric Association for two-year term. She is a distinguished life fellow of the APA, a member of the Bangladesh Medical Association of North America and American Association of Physicians from India. Dr. Begum is a medical advisor to the Rockland county Depression and Bipolar Support Association. Currently she is serving three years term as a President of Chittagong medical college alumni association of USA.
She is passionate about raising awareness regarding mental health issues and women’s issues within the Bangladeshi community of New York.
