CONG. MENG MEETS WITH NYC SCHOOLS CHANCELLOR ABOUT MAYOR DE BLASIO’S PLAN TO CHANGE ADMISSIONS PROCESS FOR NEW YORK CITY’S SPECIALIZED HIGH SCHOOLS

USANEWSONLINE.COM DESK, QUEENS, NY – U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Queens) announced June 12 that she met with New York City Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza about Mayor de Blasio’s plan to change the admissions process for New York City’s specialized high schools.

The meeting was held in the wake of Meng issuing a statement last week opposing the mayor’s plan.

During the conversation, Meng, among other things, talked about her desire to improve diversity and expressed her concerns about eliminating the SHSAT. She also expressed frustration that community leaders and elected officials from all backgrounds were not included in the discussion.

“The chancellor explained his position and listened carefully to the points I made,” said Meng. “We continue to have fundamental disagreements on this issue. But I do appreciate him listening to my concerns, and he promised that going forward, he would keep the lines of communication open.”

The meeting took place at the chancellor’s office located in the Tweed Courthouse in Lower Manhattan. Press Release.
