Zohran Mamdani, first South Asian elected to run for mayor, Raises Jaw-Dropping $845,000 in Latest Fundraising Period for New York City Mayoral Race, Nearly 11,000 individual donors power grassroots surge, Campaign Will Unlock Millions More in Matching Funds

USANewsOnline.Com Desk, New York – On Monday, DRUM Beats endorsed candidate Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani announced his campaign for NYC Mayor had raised nearly $845,000 during the last fundraising period (Jan. 11 – March 13).

Of that total, more than $500,000 is likely eligible for the city’s 8:1 match, meaning Mamdani would receive $4+ million more next month. More than 16,000 individuals have contributed to the campaign since it launched late last year. And New Yorkers from nearly every zip code across all five boroughs donated 73% of the total fundraising haul.
“We have the momentum, the movement and the money to win,” said Zohran Mamdani.
Zohran is the first South Asian candidate to run for Mayor. Zohran is the New York State Assembly member for the 36th District in Queens since 2020, becoming the first South Asian man to ever successfully win an election in New York State, Mamdani has won more than $100 million in the NYS budget for increased subway service, a lower fare hike and a successful fare-free bus pilot in every borough, went on hunger alongside taxi drivers to secure $450 million in transformative debt relief, and introduced the REPAIR Act to end the $320M+/yr property tax exemption for Columbia University and NYU, redirecting resulting revenues to CUNY.
Zohran Mamdani is now best positioned to take on Andrew Cuomo. A poll conducted just before the disgraced ex-Governor’s entry into the race found Mamdani surging into second place. Since then, Cuomo has mostly hidden from the public and dodged the press. He has yet to be spotted taking a single form of public transit.
Meanwhile, Mamdani’s sprawling field program has now knocked on nearly 100,000 doors–powered by more than 6,000 volunteers–at dozens of events across the city each week. More than a hundred new volunteers sign up each day. In the last filing period, Mamdani raised the most money from more individual donors than every other campaign combined.
“Our members proudly endorsed Zohran back in October when he first announced his candidacy for mayor after many interviews because he has over and over shown discipline and drive for fighting for our communities,” said Jagpreet Singh, Political Director of DRUM Beats, “From his hunger strike to relieve taxi driver debt to his advocacy to ensure that our South Asian and Indo-Caribbean communities had fair districts, he has been a strong champion for our communities and will be accountable to us when in office. ” Press Release.
