MISS AMERICA 2014 TO BE A JUDGE IN MENG’S CONGRESSIONAL SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH (STEM) COMPETITION

Nina Davuluri to help choose high school winner of Congresswoman’s first ever STEM contest

U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Queens) announced today that current Miss America 2014 Nina Davuluri – the first South Asian American to win the title – will be a judge for the Congresswoman’s first ever Congressional Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) contest.

Meng’s competition, entitled “The House Student App Challenge,” is part of a new nationwide contest established by the House of Representatives late last year in which high school students compete by creating and exhibiting an “app” for mobile, tablet or computer devices on a platform of their choice. The winning app in each participating Congressional district will be featured on the U.S. House of Representatives’ website (www.house.gov), and displayed in a special U.S. Capitol exhibit in Washington, D.C.    

“I am thrilled that Nina Davuluri has accepted our invitation to be a judge in our first annual Congressional STEM competition,” said Meng. “Nina is an advocate for STEM education, and a role model to those seeking to enter the STEM fields. Her involvement in our competition will further highlight the outstanding STEM talent that exists here in Queens, and I look forward to her helping to decide the winner.”

“It’s an honor to be participating as one of the judges in the first annual Congressional STEM Competition,” said Davuluri. “As Miss America, I am proud to advocate for STEM education, and I am excited to see how creative the students will be in their presentations.”

Davuluri will only judge entries in Meng’s contest. The other judge of Meng’s competition – and also the principle advisor of her contest – will be Jukay Hsu, the Founder of the Coalition for Queens (C4Q), a nonprofit organization promoting the tech industry in the borough.

Meng has spent the last few weeks visiting Queens high schools encouraging students to enter the contest. To date, she has been to Benjamin Cardozo High School in Bayside, Flushing High School in Flushing, Forest Hills High School in Forest Hills, Maspeth High School in Maspeth and Newtown High School in Elmhurst.

Students who wish to enter the Congresswoman’s contest or obtain additional information should log onto a special link on Meng’s website at http://meng.house.gov/services/stem-competition. Students taking part in the competition are required to provide a YouTube or VIMEO video demo explaining their app. All entries must be original in concept, design and execution. Students may compete individually or in teams of up to four students.

The deadline to enter the competition was April 30 but the date has been extended to May 31 to give students more time to participate. The winner will be announced at the end of June. All students who take part will receive a certificate of Congressional recognition. More than half a dozen students have already entered Meng’s contest.

The 25-year old Davuluri, a native of Syracuse, New York, was crowned 2014′s Miss America this past September at the Miss America pageant in Atlantic City. She had previously been Miss New York.

এ প্রতিযোগিতায় মাধ্যমিক স্কুলের শিক্ষার্থীরা মোবাইল ফোন, ট্যালেট বা কম্পিউটার’র জন্য নতুন নতুন অ্যাপ্লিকেশন উদ্ভাবনের মাধ্যমে তা প্রদর্শন করবে।
প্রতিযোগিতায় বিজয়ী অ্যাপ্লিকেশনটি যুক্তরাষ্ট্র কংগ্রেস’র ওয়েবসাইট এবং ওয়াশিংটনের ‘স্পেশাল ইউএস ক্যাপিটাল এক্সিবিশন’-এ প্রদর্শিত হবে। এছাড়া, প্রতিযোগিতায় অংশগ্রহণকারী প্রত্যেকেই যুক্তরাষ্ট্র কংগ্রেসের সনদ লাভ করবে।
কংগ্রেস ওম্যান গ্রেস মেং’র প্রেস কর্মকর্তা গোল্ডেস গর্ডন বাংলানিউজকে জানান, মিস আমেরিকা নিনা দেবালান কেবল মাত্র কংগ্রেস ওম্যান গ্রেস মেং’র এই প্রতিযোগিতার প্রাথমিক বাছাইয়ে অংশগ্রহণকারীদের বিচারক থাকবেন। পরবর্তী পর্যায়ে  কংগ্রেস ওম্যান গ্রেস মেং‘র প্রতিযোগিতা বিষয়ক উপদেষ্টা ও অলাভজনক সংগঠন কুইন্স কোয়ালিশনের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা জুকে সু বিচারকের দায়িত্ব পালন করবেন।
গোল্ডেস জানান, ‘মিস আমেরিকা নিনা দেবালান বলেছেন, প্রথম কংগ্রেশনাল স্টেম প্রতিযোগিতার সঙ্গে সম্পৃক্ত হতে পেরে তিনি নিজেকে সম্মানিত বোধ করছেন। 
কংগ্রেস ওম্যান গ্রেস মেং এ প্রতিযোগিতার বিষয়ে তার উচ্ছ্বাস প্রকাশ করে বলেন, এই অঙ্গনে আগ্রহীদের জন্য একজন ‘রোল মডেল‘ মিস আমেরিকা নিনা দেবলান স্টেম এর পক্ষে কাজ করছেন। 
তিনি বলেন, বিচারক হিসেবে তার সহযোগিতা ও সম্পৃক্ততা কুইন্স এলাকার মেধাবীদের বিকশিত হওয়ার ক্ষেত্রে বিশেষ ভূমিকা রাখবে।
প্রতিযোগিতায় আগ্রহীদের আরও তথ্যের জন্য http://meng.house.gov/services/stem-competition   ওয়েব ঠিকানায় যোগাযোগ করতে বলা হয়েছে। 
প্রতিযোগীদের ইউটিউব অথবা ভিমিয়ো ভিডিও ফরম্যাটে তাদের উদ্ভাবিত  ‘অ্যাপ্লিকেশন’  উপস্থাপন করতে হবে। অবশ্যই সেগুলো মৌলিক কাজ হতে হবে। একজন অথবা চার জনের দল হিসেবে প্রতিযোগীরা অংশ গ্রহণ করতে পারবে।
