UN General Assembly adopted Bangladesh’s resolution – “Culture of Peace”

UsaNewsOnline.Com, New York : Like each year, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted Bangladesh’s resolution on the Culture of Peace. It received support of all member states present at the General Assembly today 11 December and adopted by consensus. Permanent Representative of Bangladesh Ambassador Masud Bin Momen floated the proposal. In his statement, Ambassador Masud Bin Momen said, “our Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina remains personally attached to the issue, and underscores the importance of a ‘whole-of-society’ approach in our national context for promoting a culture of peace”.

The PR also said, “Culture of peace is an aspiration of all humankind. Promoting and inculcating a mindset of a culture of peace is at the core of the creative management of differences and divisions”.The concept of ‘Culture of Peace’ resolution was first noted by Bangladesh in 1997. The whole world celebrated “Decade of Culture of Peace” following that. The Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the UN had been putting up this resolution to the General Assembly every year since 2000, and each year it got adopted unanimously.

The main theme of this resolution is that if intolerance and hatred could be abolished from the society, the world would see lasting peace. This year the resolution attached special importance to the role of the children and youth to engage them more in promoting a culture of peace in the society inculcating values such as peace, tolerance, openness, inclusion and mutual respect.This year more than 60 countries in the cross-regional representation co-sponsored this resolution. Everyone has pledged to work together to implement this important resolution.

Despite various tensions across the globe, the continued support to this year’s resolution comes as a testament to the confidence of international community on Bangladesh. It also endorses the importance of ‘Culture of Peace’ in engaging all people in global development.
