ASAAL ENDORSES MELINDA KATZ FOR QUEENS DA

UsaNewsOnline.Com, New York : The Alliance of South Asian American Labor (ASAAL), a leading South Asian Labor and Community based political organization endorsed MELINDA KATZ, candidate for Queens District Attorney. The endorsement ensures a grassroots effort to reach South Asian voters while believing there will be an unprecedented South Asian voter turnout on Tuesday, June 25, 2019.

This was one of the most difficult endorsements we have ever made as all the candidates appeared to be very qualified to be the next DA of Queens. Despite this we were looking for the one who will understand our issues, knows our problems, and feels our pain as a growing community. As a City Council member MELINDA KATZ voted for the  Eid Holiday in 2008, as Borough President in 2016 she  stood with our community after an Imam and his assistant were shot dead and in 2018 her office budgeted money to establish the International Mother Language Day monument in Queens. Accordingly, if elected, we believe, MELINDA KATZ would be the most supportive District Attorney to the needs of our South Asian community.

“MELINDA KATZ as the chief prosecutor for Queens County will be the best bridge between our South Asian Community and the DA’s Office. At the time when hate crimes are rising we need MELINDA KATZ as the Queens DA who visited every prayer place in our community! Accordingly, we will do everything to deliver voters on Election Day for MELINDA KATZ” said Maf Misbah Uddin, Founder and President of ASAAL.

ASAAL’s grassroots get-out-the-vote strategy will focus on direct voter contact. “We will be going door-to-door and telling our community to vote for MELINDA KATZ on June 25^th” said Karim Chowdhury, National Secretary of ASAAL.

ASAAL’s Queens Chapter President Prof. Monirul Islam added, “we need a District Attorney like MELINDA KATZ, who promised to increase the number of South Asian ADA’s and support staff in every sphere of the District Attorney’s Office; we are committed to help her get elected and will make progress together.”

ASAAL’s endorsement process weighed each candidate’s commitment to key issues.  “Melinda is committed to help increase services for Domestic Violence and if elected she will create an advisory committee from among the community to address this issue.” said Adan Islam, Chair of the Women’s Committee of ASAAL Queens.

“Over the past 11 years, ASAAL has emerged as a powerful advocate for South Asian community members, doing important work to make sure as many people as possible are actively engaged in the political process. I’m thrilled to have their support, and I look forward to working with them to implement my plans to make the District Attorney’s office a better ally for workers, including the creation of a new Worker Protection Bureau and a Hate Crime Unit in the District Attorney’s office,” said Katz.
