He successfully served Maryland Governors as a Commissioner for Asian and South Asian American Commission for two terms (2008-2016). Currently, he is holding Vice-Chair position of the Maryland legislative District 15 Democratic Caucus.
He has several accomplishments in policy settings and law making in the State of Maryland. Two of his major and notable accomplishments are:
Mr. Anis Ahmed served as a member of the “Governmental Access” and “Citizenship” Working Groups of the Maryland Governor’s Council on New Americans in 2009-2010. Mr. Tom Perez who once a Maryland Secretary of Labor, later he become US Secretary of Labor under the President Obama’s administration. (Currently, Mr. Perez is serving as a Chairman of the Democratic National Committee). The report helped Governor Martin O’Malley and Maryland General Assembly to pass Dream Act in the State of Maryland. Maryland is one of the first state that passed Dream Act.
As a Commissioner, Mr. Ahmed was the first person who brought a motion in the Commission’s meeting to commemorate South Asian Heritage Day officially like other heritage day celebrations. Under the leadership of Senator James Rosapepe, Senator Susan Lee and Delegate Kumar Barve, Mr. Ahmed work hard for the recognition of the South Asian American Heritage day Celebration. He also participated at the Maryland Senate and House Committee Hearings in support of the bill. A bill recognizing the South Asian American Heritage day (October 2 of every year) was passed by the Maryland General Assembly and later signed by the Governor Larry Hogan in 2015. It became a law now.
He organized and managed many national, state and local events for the Asian, South Asians and Muslim Americans and over all Americans. Among all, he organized three very high level events in collaboration with the White House Initiative on Asian Pacific and Pacific Islanders (AAPI). The first was Community Forum on Meet and Greet in West Palm Beach, Florida in 2012, second event was a Community Forum on Immigration in Orlando, Florida in 2013. White House officials attended at the both events. Third event was on Immigration Forum at the North American Bangladesh Convention in New York city in September 2014. Senior Advisors to the White House AAPI, and US Immigration officials attended the event. He moderated all these three events.
Under the leadership of US Senator Chris Van Hollen and Maryland State Senator Hon. Susan Lee, he helped Coalition of Pacific Amerian Democrats (CAPAD) to organize two successful events at the United State Senate building in 2008 and 2012 in commemoration of the Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage month celebration. He also moderated two discussion forums at the Maryland State Senate Building that were organized by the Governor’s Office. The forums were on “Anti-Discrimination” and “Prevention of Human Trafficking” issues.
US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama invited Mr. Anis and Mrs. Nasima Ahmed to a White House Holiday (Christmas) Reception in December 2013 where they had a chance to meet, greet and talk with the First Couple in person.
