Dr. Shirin Chaudhury elected chair of the Commonwealth Gender Plan of AMG for the second consecutive year

Sharke Chaman Khan: State Minister for Women and Children Affairs, Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury elected chair of the ‘Commonwealth Gender Plan of Action Monitoring Group’ (CGPAMG) for the second consecutive year. She chaired the 8th session of the CGPAMG here in New York February 19. Dr. Chaudhury delivered a statement at the meeting on the progress made so far. The focus was primarily on finalizing the Mid Term Review.  At the end of Bangladesh’s tenure, a country from the Pacific region will take over.
The Commonwealth Secretariat reiterated the need to share from each other. They applauded Bangladesh for the progress made so far for women’s empowerment. Bangladesh has done a tremendous job of creating a gender budget, a one-stop crisis centre for women and has recently enacted a domestic violence act. The Secretariat said Bangladesh’s progress should be a learning experience for all countries.
Country representatives were divided based on their regional location. In the Asia region the Indian civil society representative and Dr. Chaudhury discussed how SAARC can be a ground for monitoring women’s empowerment in South Asia. They also discussed the common areas that countries in the region can work together on towards women’s empowerment.
