LIU STATEMENT ON RAMADAN

NEW YORK, N.Y. – In recognition of the month of Ramadan, which begins
at sundown tonight, City Comptroller John C. Liu made the following
statement:
“At the beginning of this holy month, I extend my best wishes to the
Muslims in New York City who will join more than a billion Muslims
around the world in observing Ramadan. With more than 800,000 Muslims
in New York City, Islam has become one of the City’s fastest growing
religious communities. The followers of Islam constitute a vital part
of the City’s vibrant mosaic of ethnic, racial, and sectarian
diversity.
“Before 1970, there were fewer than 10 mosques in New York City.
Today, there are well over 100. For the New Yorkers who worship in
these mosques, Islam transcends cultural difference and links its
followers with a common faith – a faith that teaches peace, love, and
respect.
“Ramadan is about much more than fasting. It is a time in which
Muslims re-evaluate their lives, acquire greater patience and strength
of mind, and make peace with those who have wronged them. This noble
pursuit benefits people of all beliefs.
“May this time of fasting, prayer, and increased generosity bring your
families peace and joy and, in the words of a traditional blessing:
May the spirit of Ramadan illuminate the world and show us all the way
