112th Congress should consider a special tariff preference program for Bangladesh

USA NEWS: Bangladesh deserves duty free access to the US market and Bangladesh’s friends in the Congress should play a proactive role in this regard. The US congress should also renew the GSP program in its existing forms.This was said by Bangladesh Ambassador to USA and State Minister  Akramul Qader 14 June at a talk organized jointly by the US Bangladesh Advisory Council and Trade, Aid and Security Coalition in the Longworth House Office Building of the United States House of Representatives.

 Referring to the linkages between the duty-free market access for RMG in USA and the socio-economic development of Bangladesh especially in the vital area of empowering the women, he urged the 112^th US congress to consider reintroduction of a bill to end the exceptionally high tariff regime imposed on Bangladesh’s RMG. Ambassador Qader also emphasized that the US GSP program that expired in December 2010, should be renewed in its existing forms to provide preferential treatment to the basket of products currently entering the US market from Bangladesh.Drawing attention to the qualitative change of Bangladesh’s economy from that of aid dependence to the expansion of trade and investment, he also urged both public and private investors of the US to come forward and invest in Bangladesh particularly in the power and energy sectors, ship-building and pharmaceuticals industries.
