“Africans in New York” Endorses Letitia “Tish” James for Attorney General
USANEWSONLINE.COM DESK, NEW YORK — Africans in New York, Inc., an organization dedicated to empowering leaders who share African immigrants’ values, support their well-being, and fight for justice today endorsed Letitia “Tish” James for Attorney General. In its endorsement, the organization cited Tish’s long history of standing up for immigrants’ rights — including representing an undocumented, unaccompanied minor pro bono, and pledging to take legal action as Attorney General against anyone who harms immigrants. “Tish has always stood with immigrant communities, and has always looked out for our interests. As Public Advocate, she’s defended our rights, both in and out of court. We know that as our next Attorney General, she will use the power of the law to defend us from bad actors, and will challenge Donald Trump’s hateful policies. We’re proud to endorse her candidacy for Attorney General,” said Mohamed-Mamadi O Jalloh and Mamadou Drame, founding members of Africans in New York, Inc. “We know in New York that diversity makes us stronger, and that immigrants are a vital part of our communities. I’m proud to have stood at the vanguard to defend immigrants’ rights, and I will never waver in this fight. As Attorney General, I will always stand for immigrant communities, and I am honored to earn this endorsement,” said Attorney General Letitia “Tish” James. About Public Advocate Tish James
New York City Public Advocate Tish James is running for New York Attorney General to fight for New Yorkers’ rights and to hold the powerful accountable, including Donald Trump and his harmful agenda. As Public Advocate, Tish serves as a watchdog over New York City government agencies and as an advocate and lawyer for the City’s most overlooked communities. She has transformed the Public Advocate’s Office to be a formidable engine for progressive policies and has passed more legislation than all previous Public Advocates combined. Tish successfully took on the NRA by pushing New York City’s largest pension fund to divest from gun and ammunition retailers. She fought in court on behalf of children and families on issues ranging from children with special needs to foster care to tenant protection. And she helped narrow the pervasive gender wage gap by sponsoring a groundbreaking law banning employers from asking job candidates questions about their salary history. As a City Council Member, she helped uncover the corruption behind the Office of Payroll Administration’s CityTime contract, a scheme that cost New York City over $600 million. Tish is a former public defender, assistant Attorney General, and two term New York City Council Member. She has the experience, qualifications, and courage needed to hold powerful interests accountable to the people, whether they’re corrupt politicians, abusive landlords, or greedy Wall Street executives. That’s why New Yorkers overwhelmingly re-elected Tish to a second term as Public Advocate last November. A proud Brooklynite, Tish is the daughter of working-class parents who has never forgotten her roots. She is a graduate of CUNY Lehman College and has a law degree from Howard University School of Law. She is the first woman of color to hold citywide office in New York City; and if elected, she will be the first woman of color to hold statewide office in New York State. Press Release.
