Dromm, Johnson Honor Police Officer Osvaldo Nunez for Saving the Life of a Jackson Heights Toddler

UsaNewsOnline.Com Desk, New York, NY – NYC Council Finance Chair Daniel Dromm (D-Jackson Heights, Elmhurst), NYC Council Speaker Corey Johnson, Deputy Inspector Carlos Ortiz, commanding officer of the NYPD 115th Precinct, and other members of the NYC Council gathered inside the Chambers of City Hall to honor rookie Police Office Osvaldo Nunez for saving the life of a Jackson Heights child earlier this summer.

On July 30, Officer Nunez administered CPR on Leah, an unresponsive toddler in front of Jackson Height’s 115th precinct station house after her distressed mother ran up to him crying, “My daughter’s not breathing, my daughter’s not breathing!”  Officer Nunez confirmed that Leah was unresponsive and had no pulse, took the child inside, placed her on a stool and began performing CPR.  Moments later, Leah opened her eyes and was treated at Elmhurst Hospital.

“It was an absolute pleasure to applaud Police Officer Nunez for his act of heroism,” said Dromm.  “Because of his quick thinking and immediate response, one of my youngest constituents is alive and well today.  Remarkably, Officer Nunez had been on the force for only a few weeks!  His career is certainly off to a wonderful start.  We are so proud to have him here, serving the people of Jackson Heights.”

“I could never explain the feeling that ran through my body at that time, words can never describe how I felt,” said Police Officer Nunez, describing the moments that followed after he resuscitated of Leah.  “The happiness and look of relief on her mother’s face was priceless.  This was the reason I always wanted to become a police officer: to help people and be a positive role model to the community.  I will forever be grateful for having the opportunity to become an NYPD police officer.  I will always wear the uniform with honor.”
