Peace is required everywhere

UsaNewsOnline.com, New York, 9 September : Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the Un Dr. Abdul Momen has said, peace is required everywhere from family to society to nation to region and to the world to ensure sustainable development where no one would be left behind.

He was delivering country statement at a day-long High Level Forum (HLF) of the General Assembly (GA) on Culture of Peace at the Trusteeship Council Chamber in the UN today.

Secretary General on the UN Ban Ki-moon and president of the GA Sam K. Kutesa attended the opening session of the event while Arun Gandhi, the Peace Farmer was the keynote speaker.

Ban Ki-moon said, the world has collective and imperative role in ending conflict and suffering of civilians. He said, we cannot turn our eyes.

Dr. Momen said, in promoting a culture of peace, Bangladesh, since 1997, has been actively associated in bringing the resolution of Culture of Peace to the UNGA and has been tabling this important resolution since 2001.

After the plenary session, two panel discussions were held as the part of the HLF.

Dr. Momen attended the panel discussion on “Role of the media in the promotion of the culture of peace” as one of the panelists.

Permanent Representative of Liberia to the UN Marjon V Kamara was the chair and moderator of the panel discussion.

Dr. Momen said, the world today faces too many problems of decisiveness and narrow-mindedness that disturbs and derails our shared objective of a sustainable progress, stability and progress. Inequity, discrimination, misunderstanding, intolerance and hatred around the globe are generating new dimension of conflicts. To avoid these hurdles to development, he said, the world must develop a culture of peace.

He said, the media is a powerful tool to ensure human rights, sustainable peace and stability. He said, media has a dominant role to build social awareness to restore peace. We will have to work together to establish a peaceful world, he added.
