The first meeting of the sub-group under India-Bangladesh Joint Rivers Commission for joint study on Indian proposed Tipaimukh hydro-electric project was held in New Delhi

The first meeting of the sub-group under India-Bangladesh Joint Rivers Commission for joint study on Indian proposed Tipaimukh hydro-electric (multipurpose) project was held in New Delhi on 27-28 August. Sajjad Hossain, Member, Indo-Bangladesh Joint Rivers Commission led the Bangladesh delegation. The Bangladesh delegation included among others  Mashfee Binte Shams, Director General (South Asia), Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Indian delegation was led by  Devendra Sharma, Commissioner (Ganga), Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India and Member, Indo-Bangladesh Joint Rivers Commission.

Both the sides expressed happiness at the convening of first meeting of the sub-group. They stated that this would contribute to further strengthening of the existing friendly bilateral relations adding a new dimension to it.

The meeting after detailed discussion finalized the Terms of Reference with a view to facilitating conduct of the joint study of the possible impacts of the proposed project on the relevant areas in Bangladesh.

With a view to initiating the study, the Indian side handed over to Bangladesh side all five volumes of Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared by India which contains relevant data and information relating to the proposed project. They also assured to provide additional and supplementary data and information if required for the study.

It was also agreed that the sub-group may undertake field visits to facilitate the study.

This meeting of the Sub-Group was convened in line with the desire of the Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to conduct a joint study to assess the possible impacts in Bangladesh due to proposed Tipaimukh project and earlier decisions of the JRC meetings.

The next meeting of the sub-group will be held in Dhaka at mutually agreed dates. Press Release
