Tremors jolt Dhaka, other parts

Two moderate earthquakes shook different parts of the country including capital Dhaka on Friday night, when Muslims were waiting to celebrate their greatest religious festivals Eid-ul-Fitr.

There however was no report of casualties or damages immediately.

Panicked people especially in Old Dhaka and Mirpur areas, came out of their homes after the quakes jolted their houses.

Farruque, a resident of the capital’s Mirpur-12 area, came out of his house and found reluctant to go back home fearing more quake.

The earthquakes were felt in different parts of the country including Dhaka, Narayanganj, Gazipur, Manikganj, Munshiganj, Jamalpur, Tangail, Sirajganj, Kishoreganj, Natore, Pabna, Brahmanbaria, Comilla, Chandpur, Narsingdi, Habiganj, Bagerhat, Kushtia, Magura, Khulna, Bhairab, Laxmipur, Feni, Noakhali, Shariatpur, Madaripur, Barisal, Bhola and Gopalganj within the span of nearly one hour from 10:42pm.The first tremor was felt for few seconds at 10:42pm while the second one with the magnitude of 4.8 on the Richter Scale also stay for a while and shooked the country at 11:24:17pm.

 The distance of the second tremor’s epicenter was about 46kms from Agargaon, Dhaka Seismic Observatory centre, US Geological Survey reports.

 Met Office duty forecast officer confirmed that two tremors rocked different parts of the country. But he could not provide the details as analysis was going on till filing of the reports around 11:50pm.

Earthquake expert Maksud Kamal told The Daily Star that the tremor occurred at Dhaleshwari fault line near the confluence of Dhaleswari-Shitalakkya.He also predicted that such kind of foreshakes indicate that a big one is looming over the country.
