UN Milestone resolution Adopted
UsaNewsOnline.com, New York, August 03, 2015:
Yesterday after two and half years of negotiation and millions of meetings, workshops and conferences, the UN membership has adopted the Draft Resolution for the High-level Post-2015 Development Summit of the Heads of Governments and States that will be held on Sept 25-27, 2015.
The leaders are expected to adopt it. After a non-stop marathon negotiations for over 66 hours from last Friday till yesterday (Sunday), the draft resolution entitled “Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” has been adopted with consensus at the UN at 6:24 PM.
Nearly 18 countries and regionals and other groups spoke prior to adoption of the document while another 38 countries and groups presented statements after its adoption.
Bangladesh Ambassador and Permanent Representative Dr. A. K. Abdul Momen who has been attending non-stop for last 66 hours since last Friday till late yesterday spoke prior to adoption of the resolution.
Dr. Momen says, we have come a long way and we know that all our concerns may not be truly reflected in the document, yet it is a ‘balanced document’. We are pleased that our Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina raised the issues of people’s empowerment, quality education, eradication of poverty and hunger, inclusivity, technology transfer, climate change, infrastructure development, migration and development, water management, industrialization, food and energy security, more representation of developing countries, for example, LDCs to the international financial institutions, etc and they all are included in the document before us. Therefore, my delegation that believes in consensus and multilateral processes are ready to adopt it.
He also says, this document will guide us for next 15 years and beyond and therefore, we all have to work together in partnership, I repeat in partnership, for the good of mankind, to help eradicate poverty and hunger, achieve gender parity and to have a pro-people, pro-planet, more inclusive, more equitable, peaceful, sustainable world for all where no one is left behind. When we talk of ‘no one is left behind’ and also Universal Human Rights, dear Co-facilitators, I am surprised that the issues of human and humanitarian rights of both legal and illegal migrant population has been dropped in Para 19.
Dr. Momen says, this transformative agenda is for all of us, both developing and developed countries and to achieve its goals which will make real changes in the life of millions, we have to have ‘means of implementation’ through enhancing political commitment, trust and confidence building. Through collective will, I have no hesitation, we can achieve our goals that we set for ourselves, a milestone and if we do that, the global community, rank and file, and our future generations including the one who is in the lap of Madam Malcorra will surely be proud of us.
It is interesting that Bangladesh Permanent Mission to the UN has been promoting 4Ps strategy for almost last 6 years and this time, the UN also in its Post-2015 Development agenda that it approved also included 5Ps in its Preamble and these are; People, Planet, Peace, Prosperity and Partnership.
