VICTORY AGAINST TIDE OF INTENSIFIED VOTER SUPPRESSION

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Comptroller John C. Liu stated the following in response to questions about the U.S. Supreme Court ruling today striking down Arizona’s restrictive law requiring proof of citizenship for new voter registrations:

“This is a victory against the tide of voter suppression measures that has shockingly intensified in recent years.  Today’s ruling sends a strong message to other states that have or are considering similar government-sanctioned forms of discrimination and second-class citizenship.  At a time when our nation faces profound issues, we should be doing more to enhance voting rights and participation, not to suppress and disenfranchise.” Press Release.
