71st Session of UNGA : Situation in Afghanistan

UsaNewsOnline.Com Desk, New York, 17 November : Bangladesh today urged the international community to continue its support to Afghanistan to achieve sustainable peace and development. Addressing the ongoing 71st session of the UN General Assembly on the situation in Afghanistan, Ambassador Masud Bin Momen, Permanent Representative (PR) of Bangladesh to the UN said that Bangladesh shares the concerns over sustained threats posed by terrorists and violent extremists in Afghanistan. The PR reiterated the crucial importance of combating transnational organized crimes, particularly trafficking in illicit drugs, through enhancing regional cooperation in surveillance, intelligence, investigation and prosecution. The Ambassador added, “Under the guidance of our Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh continues to attach the highest priority to further widening and deepening relations with our neighbors in the South Asian region.” He stressed that Afghanistan’s strategic potential to serve as a regional connectivity hub should be leveraged with the support of all regional countries. This can help revive the historic linkages across borders and unlock further development opportunities for the two billion peoples of South Asia, he observed. Mentioning Bangladesh as the ‘Role Model of Development’ the PR also stated that Bangladesh stands ready to assist Afghanistan in areas such as women’s empowerment, non-formal education, community healthcare, water and sanitation, human resource development, judicial system reforms, banking and financial sector reform, disaster management, agriculture extension, youth development and social and humanitarian programmes.
