Bangladesh Government will continue to empower women to unlock their potentials
UsaNewsOnline.Com, New York, 17 March : Women rights are human rights and the Government of Bangladesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been working relentlessly to ensure the equal and active participation of women in the mainstream socio-economic activities of the country, says Dr. Dipu Moni, MP, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs at an event on “Empowering parliaments to empower women: Making the economy work for women” organized by the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) on the side lines of the sixty-first session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). Underscoring that the economic empowerment of the women cannot be achieved without addressing the deeply entrenched discriminatory norms and legal barriers to women’s autonomy, she mentioned the legislative as well as administrative measures Bangladesh has adopted to advance the political, administrative and economic empowerment of women in the country. She added that, despite many challenges, a considerable number of women are in decision making roles in Bangladesh and the Government has facilitated the overall development of women by introducing Gender responsive budgeting, skill development, ensuring access to the digital world and focus on financial inclusion of women in the 7th 5 Year Plan.
Dr. Dipu Moni, MP is leading the Bangladesh Parliamentary delegation to this IPU event held in the UN Headquarters in New York. Mr. Abdul Latif, MP and Ms. Saira Mohsin, MP are the other members of the delegation.
The event was attended by the Parliamentarians of different countries who highlighted the important role parliaments could play to materialize gender equality and shared best practices in their respective countries in this regard. In a session on “Promoting the financial inclusion of women”, Mexican Senator, who was also a panelist, highly praised the efforts made by the Government of Bangladesh to ensure financial inclusion of women.
In the evening, Dr. Dipu Moni, MP attended as the Chief Guest an event in the Bangladesh Consulate General in New York to observe the 97th Birth Anniversary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the National Children’s Day. Later she attended another meeting as a
Chief Guest to celebrate 97th Birth Anniversary of the Father of the Nation organized by Bangladesh Sramik League, USA at Jackson Heights in the City. She was also interviewed by a local Bangladeshi electronic media.
