Biman’s Dhaka-NY flight resumes next year: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said Bangladesh Biman will resume its operation on Dhaka-New York route from next year.

“More new aircraft would be included in the Biman fleet in 2011 when you will see Bangladesh Biman in New York,” she told expatriate Bangladeshis while addressing a reception here.

The US chapter of Bangladesh Awami League hosted the reception in honour of the prime minister at Hotel Hilton. Hundreds of expatriate Bangladeshis living in different states in the USA joined the reception.

Hasina expressed her government’s desire to set up a bank especially for the Non-Resident Bangladeshis (NRB) so that they could invest in their motherland.

“A specialised NRB Bank would be set up so that you can invest in Bangladesh’s important sectors as well as sending money to your families smoothly,” she added.

Referring to a long-standing demand of expatriate Bangladeshis to include them in the voter list in Bangladesh, she said her government would do whatever necessary so that they get their voting rights.

About the government’s favourable investment policy, she said an excellent investment environment is prevailing in Bangladesh and the expatriates could avail the opportunities for the greater national interest.

“I call upon you to invest in Bangladesh’s booming sectors like ICT taking the advantage of investment friendly environment,” she said adding that foreign investment is coming to Bangladesh considering it as one of the best investment destinations.

Mentioning the contribution of Bangladeshi expatriates to the country’s economy, the prime minister said her government always considers welfare of the expatriates as they are playing a very important role for achieving economic development of the nation.

Among others, Finance Minister AMA Muhith, PM’s son and eminent IT specialist Sajib Wazed Joy, Foreign Minister Dipu Moni and Chief Whip Vice-Principal Abdus Shahid addressed the reception with Awami League president of USA unit Dr Khaled Hasan in the chair.
