Foreign Policy (FP) accolades Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina

UsaNewsOnline.com, 3 December : Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been named as a leading Global Thinker by “Foreign Policy”- a Washington-based reputed global magazine on politics, news and ideas.
FP recently published its seventh annual special issue featuring Foreign Policy’s 100 leading Global Thinkers. According to FP, “this year’s Global Thinkers represent how the struggle from Raqqa to Washington, Athens to Kabul- continues. While some of them are impediments, many more have generated ideas that could promise humankind a better future.”
FP has named the leading Global Thinkers in nine categories: decision-makers, challengers, innovators, advocates, artists, healers, stewards, chroniclers, and moguls. This year FP selected thirteen global personalities including four Heads of State or Government, in decision-makers category who took bold decisions and steered strong strategies towards a sustainable future.
Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Bangladesh, has been chosen in the Decision-makers category for her outstanding contributions in addressing the vulnerabilities of climate change. Studies suggest that a meter rise in the ocean level would submerge one-fifth of Bangladesh displacing over 30 million of the country’s population. The visionary leader Sheikh Hasina declared environmental protection a national priority and called on the developed nations to follow the example of Bangladesh, who in spite of producing only 0.3 % of the global emissions created a National Climate Change Strategy (2009). In fact, Bangladesh was the first developing nation to create the Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan. The Government of Bangladesh allocated USD 385 million to its climate change trust fund from 2009-2010 to 2014-2015. Bangladesh is willing to share its experiences on climate resilience strategies with the world. Sheikh Hasina urged the global leaders to “bring their resources to bear on the greatest challenge of our time”.
Recognizing her committed leadership in climate change resilience, this year the United Nations honored Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina with the “Champions of the Earth” award. PRESS RELEASE
