UsaNewsOnline.Com Desk, New York : Addressing the General Assembly during a Special commemorative event to pay tribute to the Former President of the Republic of Cuba and Leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz, today (20 December) morning, Ambassador Masud Bin Momen, Permanent Representative (PR) of Bangladesh to the United Nations recalled the memories of the first historic meeting between Father of the Nations, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Commander Fidel that took place during 1973 NAM Summit at Algiers. The Ambassador said that the two great minds shared their views on contemporary global issues and envisioned a peaceful world beyond poverty, conflicts and all forms of injustice. At the end of the meeting Commander Fidel embraced Bangabandhu and remarked, “I have not seen the Himalayas. But I have seen Sheikh Mujib. In personality and in courage, this man is the Himalayas. I have thus had the experience of witnessing the Himalayas”, the PR also mentioned. The Permanent Representative underscored the extraordinary character, great courage and vision of Commander Fidel that not only inspired Cuba but also resurrected many other developing countries to sustain their struggles against poverty, inequality and injustice. He mentioned that Castro was the true architect of Modern Cuba, one of the founding members of NAM and a voice for the most vulnerable, who will always be remembered for his aspiration to create a fair and equitable world order. The Ambassador expressed that Bangladesh will always remember his work and legacy. In the afternoon, Ambassador Masud made a statement at the Security Council’s High-level Open Debate on “Trafficking in Persons in Conflict Situations”. The Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy presided over the Council meeting that adopted a new, comprehensive Resolution on the subject. Ambassador Masud reiterated Bangladesh’s commitment to combating the global scourge of human trafficking. He expressed concerns over some international terrorist groups using human trafficking to increase their power, recruitment and finances. The Ambassador underscored the need for a sound global migration governance to promote safe, orderly and regular migration. He also stressed the need for mutual legal assistance among countries to increase prosecution and conviction in trafficking related cases. Ambassador Masud urged relevant international, regional and national entities to work together to break the nexus between human trafficking and other organised crimes during armed conflicts.Press Release
